Snapchat is one op the most popular social networking apps right now that allows you to share photos and short videos with your friends. These photos and videos (or also called 'snaps') can become as crazy as you want by using special filters and stickers. These filters change every once in a while to keep it interesting. There is an option to let your friends see your snap for as long as you want (from 1 to 10 seconds) and after that your snap will be deleted. But more about that later.
You can add text to your snap as well. This is a way to have an entire photo-conversation with the friends that you choose. You can add the people that you want and only they can sent and receive snaps from you. You can also put a snap on your 'story' which allows your friends to see that specific snap multiple times.
Snapchat became famous in a very short period of time and is most frequently used by teenagers. It's a creative way to have a chat conversation with someone using photos, videos, filters and texts.
You can also look at featuring news on Snapchat. These can be a little quiz or tips on how to make something or even a live stream of an award show. These features are updated daily and are the same worldwide. You can also share a feature that you like with your friends, for example, you can ask them to take a quiz with you.
A 'story' is a place where you can post snaps and your friends are able to see them within the 24 hours after being posted, unless you decide to delete it before then. In Settings, under 'who can', you can choose who can see your story. You can show your story to everyone, your friends or you can make a custom list of people that can see it by selecting the friends you want to block from seeing your story.
Before you start snapchatting away, there are a couple of VERY IMPORTANT things you need to keep in mind.
Snapchat starting with the idea of sending amusing snaps and that they'd be deleted immediately after. But that didn't work out the way they planned it. Snapchat soon became the "sexting app" when people started sending inappropriate snaps and the receiver of those snaps could save them. How you ask? They did this by taking screenshots. Screenshots are a way to take a photo of your screen by just doing some simple actions. They can take a screenshot when they're playing your snap so that they have a picture of the screen with your photo on it. So know you know that the snaps you sent could be screenshotted and saved so be careful with what you send.
To protect children from "sexting" and cyberbullying, you can now make a snapchat account once you're 18 years old. Snapchat allows you to sign in once you're 13 if you have your parent's permission. However, if your parents don't approve, there is a new version of Snapchat called SnapKidz. Our younger team has tested it out but they weren't that excited about it. SnapKidz does have better safety options for the reason that you cannot send snaps to anyone who's not your friend and there is no such thing as a story in SnapKidz.
Other than the fact that all the snaps you sent can be saved by your friends, there is something else you need to keep in mind when making a Snapchat account. In the Privacy Policy on Snapchat, it's listed that Snapchat has all right to the photos and videos that you send out and it can be used for any purpose of their choice. Also, when downloading this app, you're giving Snapchat acces to all information regarding your contacts.
The day you turn 18 you can download Snapchat without the permission of your parents. You should be old enough to know what kind of snaps you should and should not send and keep in mind that there are other risks when downloading the Snapchat app in the app- or playstore.
Once you've downloaded the app, we have a couple of tips for you to get started.
First of all, you will need to make an account. We'll show you how:Open the app and click on 'Sign Up'
Fill in your first and last name and then click on 'Sign up & Accept'
Next you fill in your birthdate. (Note that you should be over 13 to sign up.)
After that have to choose whether you want to use an email address or a phone number (or both) to sign up. We advice you to choose the option using an email address because it's safer.
The last step is to add your friends from your contacts.
Great, you have a Snapchat account now. You can start Snapchatting.
Snapchat consists op 3 pages: the left one to chat, the middle one to make the photo or video and the right one is to look at stories of your friends and the daily news features. You can change pages by swiping left and right.
You can also add filters to your snaps. We will show you how:
1: Go to your middle screen and get in position to take a selfie.
2: Then you long-click on your screen until the circles underneath pop up.
3: Choose a filter that you like and then take the snap.
4: Are you happy with your snap? Then press on the blue button in the bottom right corner to send your snap.
5: You can now choose if you want to send it to your friends or put it on your story or even both if you'd like. There is also a shortcut to put a snap on your story. When you're editing your photo or video, there are 3 buttons in the bottom left corner of your screen. The middle third one is to post the picture directly to your story.
You decide how safe an app can be... it's up to you
Done, now you know everything you need to know about Snapchat!
